Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Recall<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On July 6, 2012, Stryker Orthopaedics issued a voluntary recall of two components of its hip implants. The components affected are the Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems.<\/p>

The Stryker Rejuvenate hip implant is different from other hip replacement devices because it is not a metal-on-metal hip replacement device. The Rejuvenate hip replacement device was meant as an alternative to the metal-on-metal devices, and uses a ceramic component. It was marketed as a modular hip replacement \u2013 especially to younger patients. Its components were custom-made to fit better, resulting in a longer-lasting hip replacement with a greater range of motion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In a statement, the company said that it was recalling the components \u201cbecause there is a potential for fretting and corrosion at the modular neck junction which may lead to adverse local tissue reactions.\u201d This is likely in reference to the Stryker recipients who reportedly developed metallosis \u2013 which can occur when friction, fretting, or corrosion causes metal particles from an implant to be released into the patient\u2019s body. These particles can damage tissue or bone, or get into the patient\u2019s bloodstream.<\/p>

Because the Stryker Rejuvenate hip implant\u00a0does not have a metal-on-metal ball and socket design, it was initially believed that metallosis was not possible. However, the Stryker device\u2019s metal neck piece can, under certain conditions, rub against its metal stem, causing metallic debris to come loose.<\/p>
